Children of the Cornstarch
April 26th, 2007

Each year SU does this thing called 'Mayfest', where they give the students a day off and have a bunch of different demonstrations all over campus. One of the physics demonstrations this year was about Non-Newtonian fluids. The basic idea being that the viscosity of a non-Newtonian fluid changes with the applied strain rate. The faster and harder you hit it, the harder it is. So if you run on top of the fluid, you stay on top, but if you stand still, you sink. It's pretty cool, and easy to make, since you can make a non-Newtonian fluid out of cornstarch and water.

A Suggestion
April 19th, 2007

If in the course of your physics homework, you get a velocity that is imaginary, it might be a good idea to check over your work. Who knows, maybe you're right, but it's a good idea to double check.

Also, just because something is at rest does not mean that it has no acceleration.

That is all.

I remember that episode!
April 17th, 2007

The latest official Lost podcast has an interview with M.C. Gainey (a.k.a. Mr. Friendly, Zeke, Tom). In it, Gainey mentions that he met Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse on the show “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr”. In it, Gainey played a character called Big Smith and was killed by being thrown off a train. But, as is always the case, he had a special space-orb-thing in hand at the time (and came back to life with special powers?). As it happens that scene (or maybe just the orb) is the one thing I remember from the show, which is probably for the best…

Movies
April 11th, 2007

I finally got around to seeing Children of Men. I have to say that at the end of the film I was rather sad. Sad because I was never getting that hour and forty-nine minutes of my life back! What a stinking, festering pile of… Overreacting? Maybe. But I was just so disappointed in this film, a film that I thought would at least be interesting and that came with recommendations, I seriously considered canceling my Netflix account. I mean, if this is one of the best films in my queue, what the hell is the point?

On a side note, tonight's episode of Lost was fantastic, though I may have to start agreeing with Jenny about Jack. 24 has also been exciting, though I have to wonder about what they have planned for the rest of the season.
