Trenton Falls

The weather was nice today, so Dad and I headed up to Trenton Falls.

Lower High Falls

Upper High Falls

There’s more in the photo album along with some photos I took of the flowers out in the garden.

Tinker Falls
April 25th, 2008

Dad and I picked another waterfall off of NYfalls.com to check out today. Tinker Falls is in the middle of Labrador Hollow, about 15 miles the other side of Cazenovia. The only problem we ran into was the bugs. It’s so early in the year, I didn’t even think to bring spray.

This pic proves I need to take some photography lessons.

We also tried to find Fellow’s Falls, but when they say getting to it is difficult, they aren’t kidding.

Now I just need to find a website like nyinterestingthingsotherthanwaterfalls.com or nyhowtogetalife.com.

The Strike is Over
April 24th, 2008

We’re finally starting to get some post-strike written episodes of TV. The Office and The Big Bang Theory have had a few episodes each already. Last night, Law & Order had their first new episode in a while and didn’t waste any time in showing how poor the writing can be. It was yet another personal story about one of the main characters, making it just like every other police drama on TV. Honestly, L&O has become a shadow of it’s former self and needs to be put down quickly for it’s own sake.

Lost starts up again tonight with an ominously titled episode, “The Shape of Things to Come”. This season started with a quick, refreshing pace, but lagged badly towards the end of the first set of episodes, ending with a very ‘blah’ cliffhanger. Hopefully, they came up with some new ideas during all that time off.

Tomorrow night we’ll get a new episode of Doctor Who, less than three weeks after it aired in the UK. I’m glad they finally managed to get it somewhat in sync, though I guess I should be more understanding given all the localization/translation work they have to do to make it ready for the US.

Wii-Wheeling
April 23rd, 2008

From my perspective, there hasn’t been much to get excited about on the Wii lately. Super Smash Brothers Brawl includes some neat new characters like Olimario/Pikmin and even scored well on IGN, but not being much of a fighter fan, I didn’t think it warranted a full price purchase. After the mediocre Mario Kart for Gamecube, the Wii version hasn’t gotten me excited, either.

Until recently, that is. Mario Kart really lives and dies on it’s tracks and it looks like the Wii version will have some interesting new ones, like Wario’s Gold Mine. It will also include some retro tracks from the DS, Gamecube, N64, and even SNES.

In terms of features, they’ve dropped ’snaking’ which was a method of getting a boost by moving the control stick back and forth while in a power slide. You can still get a boost by doing a power slide, but you don’t have to do the back and forth motion. I think that will help balance things when playing with less experienced players. More importantly, they’ve added an online mode. You can play with up to 11 other racers, but there’s no voice chat option, so you won’t be able to trash talk while doing it. My understanding is that you can have 2 people on each machine while playing online. There’s also some bad changes. Battle mode can be played online, but there’s no option to play free-for-all. You have to play on one of two teams, whether playing online or off. It’s a strange restriction.

Mario Kart Wii releases on Sunday April 27th. There’s a video review available at IGN, as well as the written one. If this sounds like an advertisement, that’s because it is, in a way. I want as many people to race against as possible. I’ll try to pick it up on Sunday and let you know how it is.

As far as other games go, Okami looks interesting. It’s very similar to The Legend of Zelda, but includes a drawing mechanic that fits well with the Wii remote’s IR capabilities. It was released on the PS2 a while back, and was reviewed very well at the time, but I think just about everyone agreed that it should have been released for the Wii. The only thing holding me back from picking it up is that it’s as long as a Zelda game, and the last one took me nearly a year to finish.

Wii Ware games will start being released next month. These are games that have been designed for the Wii, but are available for download through the Wii Shop Channel. They also tend to be shorter, because of the 43MB size limit. Both LostWinds and World of Goo look interesting.

Now that’s timing…
April 23rd, 2008

I’ve been looking for more interesting things to see in Upstate New York, and NYfalls.com has been a pretty cool resource in that regard. I was checking it out today and noticed that Trenton Falls will be open this weekend. It’s only open 4 weekends this year, so it certainly would be different. Of course, it’s suppose to rain this weekend, so it may not be worth doing at all. Oh, well.

The list of other things I want to check out include
Taughannock Falls State Park
Frontenac Falls
Havana Glen Park
Letchworth St. Park
Watkin’s Glen
Corbett’s Glen Nature Park
Au Sable Chasm

and that’s just in New York. I can’t remember ever going to either Letchworth or Watkin’s Glen, so yeah, I’ve got some catching up to do.
