A Call for Books
May 30th, 2008

I’m afraid that the book I’m reading right now, ‘A Storm of Swords’, has run a bit dry so I haven’t picked it up in a while. Coincidentally, one of the editors at IGN recently asked for book suggestions and below is a list of some that got mentioned. I’ve read some of Gaiman before, and would be willing to try another by him. I’ve heard of Robert Jordan, but can’t remember if what I heard was good or bad. I’ve read ‘Starship Troopers’ but what I’ve heard about some of his other stuff doesn’t exactly make me want to read more Heinlein. Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse-five which was referenced in Lost and might help me understand Jenny’s theory. The rest sounded interesting based on what people were saying, but I don’t know if they are the best source for suggestions. If you’ve happen to have any suggestions, let me know.

American Gods – Neil Gaiman
The Wheel of Time – Robert Jordan
Eon – Greg Bear
Name of the Wind – Patrick Rothfuss
Prince of Nothing Series – Scott Bakker
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress – Robert Heinlein
The Road – [Cormac McCarthy]
Watchmen – [Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons]
In the Lake of the Woods – Tim O’Brien
Sirens of Titan – Kurt Vonnegut

[] indicates that I had to guess at the author.

Postcards from Azeroth
May 28th, 2008

My subscription to World of Warcraft recently ran out, but before it did, I snapped a few screenshots of the adventures of my Human Warrior, Jaconus, who ended up just short of level 53.

This is the sort of trouble that Pete would get me into. The red guys are the bad guys. You might be able to just see my character in there, somewhere. I died shortly after taking this screenshot.

But it’s all good, he didn’t survive either.

I’m not so sure about the ‘chill’ part.

Apparently in the world of Warcraft, you can enchant anything.

This is what I get for grouping with a tailor.

Typos can lead to some awkward situations.

Just kickin’ back.

Maybe the texture artist took that day off…

Makes you wonder what the story is behind that mana potion.

The Tour of New York Continues
May 25th, 2008

The weather was nice today, in fact it was the best we’ve had this year, so Dad and I headed out to see some more waterfalls. Our first stop wasn’t for a waterfall at all, but to get a picture of the John J. Mcgraw monument in Truxton, where he was born.

Our next stop was at Taughannock Falls which is 215 feet tall, the tallest in New York.

From there we went to Watkins Glen State Park.

And now I definitely understand why you want defuse light while trying to photograph waterfalls. There’s more photos in the album.

Somebody Didn’t Read the Memo
May 24th, 2008

Dad and I were going out to Pixley Falls, but when we drove past Fort Stanwix we saw that something was going on so we decided to stop.

That’s odd, I seem to remember us winning that war…

Contrary to popular opinion, the Revolutionary War was fought over pizza.

And, of course, we have the requisite cannon video. Sorry for the shakiness, but I didn’t have anything to brace myself against.

There’s more photos in the album.

Public Service Announcement: Get Firefox 3
May 21st, 2008

This article goes over some of the improvements in the latest version of Firefox. The only really important one is #1, improved performance. I’ve been using Release Candidate 1 for a few days now, and the change is very noticeable. Pages load faster and response time is quicker. If you want to be on the extra-careful side, you can wait till the official release, but like I said, I’ve been using it for a few days, and I haven’t noticed any problems.
