The Fifth Element
July 29th, 2008

is Boron.

One of the first things to come out of Digg’s new recommendation engine was a link to these videos about the elements in the periodic table. They’re fun and informative. Watch for the explosion in the first video, stay for the hair.

If you want to watch the movie with a half-bald Lt. Gordon, Hulu has it up for free, like all of their stuff. This summer they’ve been putting up a movie/show each weekday, including some pretty interesting stuff. I’m happy to say that today’s movie is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which was released earlier this month, but finished it’s run on it’s own website shortly thereafter.

Dr. Horrible is a musical (yes, that’s right, I’m recommending a musical) created by Joss Whedon and a few others and is about an evil genius trying to join the Evil League of Evil. It was created as a reaction to the writer’s stike, but still has pretty good production values. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. I don’t know if you have till the end of the summer to see it on Hulu or not, but I recommend checking it out when you get a chance.

Felicia Day was unknown to me before Dr. Horrible, but through Penny Arcade, I found out that she stars in an online short comedy about gamers called The Guild (the official website seems to be down at the moment). It’s production values are a good bit less than Dr. Horrible’s, but it’s still worth watching if you’re into MMO’s at all.

A Lesson Best Learned in a Doctor’s Office
July 10th, 2008

and not driving a car, or on a mountain.

I was a the doctor’s office today for some test results, which turned out to be ok. I followed the doctor out to where I setup my next appointment. As I was walking, I started to feel dizzy and lightheaded. My vision became obscured by what looked like a color version of TV snow. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me, so I figured if I just leaned against the desk, it would pass. I very quickly found myself surrounded by an entire nursing/office staff and then shortly after, found myself on the floor, which is, I suppose, the order you want those things to happen. One of the nurses, who I recognized from church, claims to have been talking to me when this started happening, but I have no recollection of it. They checked my blood pressure, fed me and made me lay down for a while. After I returned to the proper color and an ample amount of time had passed, they finally let me go home.

So, what lesson did I learn? Don’t skip lunch, especially when you’re dieting. It’s been a while since I’ve done something this stupid/embarrassing, so it probably was about time for me. Good grief.

Masterful Work
July 6th, 2008

Oops, forgot the ‘Not-So’.

As you can see, the rear thwart has been rotting for a while now and needed to be replaced. The problem was that Old Town only makes one of that type of piece for all it’s canoes, so it became a bit of a project to get it to fit. You can also see that we had some ‘guests’ using the canoe.

Hmmm.

The finished work

I’m afraid we’re going to have to replace the yolk as well, at some point.

We went out to the RiverHouse Restaurant again today. Along the way, near the dam, there’s a couple of rather large bird’s nests. I’m not sure what type of bird that is, but I did get a video, so you can hear it’s call:

The other nest.

I’ve always meant to get a picture of this.

One Jumped Over the Hood
July 5th, 2008

Dad and I didn’t have anything planned for today, so we headed up to camp for a swim. Afterward, we went to Pulaski to try to find a place to eat. We finally settled on The RiverHouse Restaurant, which looked a good bit better than the other places in town. I got the Tuscan Chicken, which was very good. I ended up using the skin from my baked potato to soak up the sauce.
I figured that I had been bad enough with dinner, so when Dad ordered Pecan Pie, I didn’t get anything for myself. I did however try a small piece of his, which was a big mistake. I’ve always avoided Pecan Pie, because I’m not a big fan of nuts in dessert, but I’ve been trying a few new things lately and this stuff was fantastic. I was not as impressed with the bit of swordfish that I had the other day, but I was not nearly as revolted as I expected.
We went back to camp to catch the fireworks, and I’m happy to report that the south side won this year’s battle (as subjectively determined by me). There were even some people setting off some from the beach. Dad and I were standing by the edge of the water by the red fence and had a fair amount of ash land on us.
On the way home we spent the whole time checking for deer as Dad had a rather interesting experience the last time he came home from camp. He saw a deer cross the road and slowed down thinking there might be more. Instead the deer that had already crossed decided to go back across the road and jumped over Dad’s hood, hitting it’s hoof on the windshield in the process. Luckily, Dad was going slow enough, so no damage was done.

PSA: Firefly Complete Series for $17
July 2nd, 2008

Just saw this on Frugal Gamer. 17 bucks for one of the best television shows ever made is a steal, even if it is only 13 episodes long.

Can you tell I’m a Browncoat?
